Therefore と thereby はどちらも「結果」を表現するときに使います。だから二つの単語は interchangeableです（入れ替えても大丈夫）。

しかし、therefore には「その理由によって」という意味があるのに対して、thereby には「その手段・方法・手法によって」という意味があります。

センテンスを書くときに、物事の具体的なプロセスや成り行きを強調したい場合は、therefore よりも thereby を使った方が効果的でしょう。

ポピュラーなスタイルは、原因となる出来事や事柄を説明した部分をコンマで区切ってから、「thereby + 〜ing」とする表現です。

例えば、

The construction crew will be forced to utilize some areas of the beach, thereby causing damages to marine habitats.

Japan’s methane hydrate project will create new jobs and enhance the nation’s security by putting an end to our perpetual dependence on foreign energy, thereby creating a safe and peaceful future for our country.

「therefore + 〜ing」という表現ももちろん可能ですが、「thereby + 〜ing」を目にすることの方が多いでしょう。

逆に therefore に比較的多いスタイルは「and therefore」です。

Akira Yamazaki, the 32 year-old candidate, couldn’t attract the older voters he expected and therefore had to pull out of the mayoral campaign.

「and thereby」という表現もできますが、前述のパターンを見ることの方が多いでしょう。また、下記の therefore に注目してください。

The city was hit by a snowstorm. Therefore, we couldn’t leave the house.

このように therefore を文頭に書き、コンマで区切る、というスタイルは一般的です。しかし、それに比べて、thereby を文頭で目にするのは圧倒的に少ないはずです。
